How To Tie Dye Your New Shirt

(Double-check the instructions for your fabric dye, some of their guidelines might differ from Dre's technique!)

List of Items You'll Need:

  • Your brand new shirt :)
  • Fabric dye. Dyes can be bought online, at most arts and crafts stores, or can even be made from food scraps. The TM shirt is 100% cotton so double check what kind of fabric your dye can be used for.
  • Optional: Soda Ash (sodium carbonate). Many pre-packaged tie dye sets will include this as it helps prepare the shirt fibers to absorb the dye and make results brighter and longer lasting. Some sources say you can sub baking soda or salt for soda ash but it's also fine to go without
  • A bucket big enough to soak your shirt in water (mixed with soda ash or a substitute)
  • Rubber bands. There are a LOT of different tying techniques so make a plan for what kind of pattern you'd like
  • A pair of gloves to keep your hands from getting stained or irritated from soda ash
  • A bottle for your dye, preferrably with a squirt top
  • A large, flat surface with something to cover it (like a plastic sheet or trash bag) to keep it from getting stained
  • Another plastic bag or container with a lid for your shirt to rest in while it absorbs the dye
